Changes to Union Dues Beginning January 2027
On 21 September 2026, Local 261 Members voted to change how Local 261 dues are calculated. The current way of calculating dues ends on 31 December 2026. The new way starts with the first pay period on or after 1 January 2027.
Why the Change?
The old structure was hard to follow and was not in line with the Union’s principles of equity and fairness. Some members paid a flat amount, some paid a percentage on top of a base fee, and dues were capped. Part Time employees were disproportionately impacted under the previous system, and will now pay dues that better reflect the hours they work.
Unite Here! Local 261 is also taking steps to better align themselves with industry standards. These efforts will better equip us to represent our membership, access resources to more effective advocates and continue to protect your rights to our best ability.
New system: effective the first pay period on or after 1 January 2027
What will you Pay?
Regular dues are 1.65% of your total gross wages for that bi-weekly pay. Total gross means the whole pay: wages, overtime, premiums, vacation pay, and declared tips and gratuities.
There is one rate for every member and every classification. There is no cap.
The new system standardizes the due’s process across every member.
Initiation and Reinstatement
A new employee, or a returning member who must be reinstated, pays $60 to the union. The full amount is deducted on the first pay. It is no longer split over two pays. You are not in good standing until that fee is paid in full.
If you are off work
A member who is two calendar months behind on dues is automatically suspended. That includes layoff, unpaid leave, or any period with no pay, unless you pay dues directly to the Local or are placed on withdrawal before the end of the second calendar month.
A member on withdrawal stays covered by the collective agreement and is not charged a new initiation fee on return. While on withdrawal, you are not in good standing to attend meetings or vote until you are restored. If a reinstatement fee applies, the $60 and current dues are deducted on the first pay after you return.
